Are you taking site building on the Road, but having a hard time staying connected to the Internet?
Before I can go any further I must make a disclaimer about this method of connecting your cell phone to a Laptop. Use of Cell Phone Bandwidth through a laptop may be against the terms of your contract with the company. Data Plans are all different, so read your TOS first.
So what I do as a back up to access the Internet when I can’t find a Wi-Fi signal is tether my Motorola V3 Razor to my notebook computer. Tether Phone can be done with any GRSM Phone, but since I use a Motorola V3 Razr Phone thats the method described here.
1st: Find a tether or cable that is suitable for your Cell Phone. I use a Mini USB x USB that’s about 18 inches.
2nd: Buy a Motorola Phone Tools Disk
3rd: Have your unlimited Data Network turned on. The unlimited data network for text messaging. If you fail to take this step I guarantee you that you will have a huge Bill from your service provider. Tell them you want Internet access from your smartphone.
4 Step is to install Motorola Phone Tools and complete the set up.
5Th: Connect your phone to your computer. Wait a few minutes.
6Th open the Motorola Phone Tools Software on you desktop or from all programs menu. When the software opens you will see a replica of your phone on your screen. You will see Sync, Phone Book, Calendar, Text Messaging, and Connect to The Internet VIA GPRS on the bottom. Your Cell Phone should then start to search for the GSM on your phone. When the phone stops flashing “Please Wait” Click on connect to the Internet.
After a few seconds 2 bubbles should pop up saying your connected. Wait a few second and try to open your Internet Explorer. You should now be connected to the Internet through a Cell Phone.
Now the speed is more like a dial up connection and opening to many tabs will slow you down, but if you need to make a post like this in less than a hour with Keyword Anchor Text Links this is how it’s done.
I just did it writing this post.
What made me think of this post was when a woman today asked me why I didn’t return her text message. Well the answer is I’m not a 20 year old kid who can text their butt off. Imagine trying to write a post like this using text on even a Blackberry. It would take you much more than a hour.
I just posted this from my temporary housing at Beaver Creek in Avon Colorado. We don’t have wireless.
It is very important to add content to all your website consistently. The $12 a month I paid to have my data plan turned on was well worth even this one post.
I have used this method on almost every ski trip I have taken over the last 4 or 5 years and never encountered a problem with being charge for using to much bandwidth, but please read your TOS and remember Your UNLIMITED plan is what you need.
I use this method (sort of) with Sprint and the included internet sharing with my HTC Sprint Mogul (Touch Screen Pocket PC). Never knew you could do it with a Razr!
The most thorough and informative information I have found. Enjoyed it immensely.
Wonderful well this reading.
